Glucose/dehydroascorbate transporter (GLUT14) is a cell membrane protein that transport sugars such as glucose and fructose into cells, and is encoded for by the SLC2A14 gene. Although information on the gene is limited, it is thought to transport glucose and dehydroascorbic acid (a form of vitamin C) into cells, and distinct variants have been described showing different levels of function 1.

Similar proteins to GLUT14 with SNPs are associated with the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), along with a lack of proper dietary antioxidant take up, especially of vitamin C 2,3,4.

Risk Description

The risk allele ‘G’ of the SNP rs10846086 in the SLC2A14 gene has been associated with an increased risk of developing ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease in a single study, along with rs2889504 and rs12815313.

The authors propose that this effect is driven by a reduction in the amount of vitamin C absorbed by the cells lining the gut, which leads to a lack of antioxidant activity 5.

Direct Nutrients:*

Ingredient Active Ingredient Effect
Vitamin C Ascorbic acid

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant important in many tissues throughout the body 6.

Supplementation may therefore benefit those carrying the risk ‘G’ allele of the SNP rs10846086, which is associated with impaired vitamin C uptake in the gut, and the development of IBD.

Risk Description

The risk allele ‘A’ of the SNP rs2889504 in the SLC2A14 gene has been associated with an increased risk of developing ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease in a single study, along with rs10846086 and rs12815313.

The authors propose that this effect is driven by a reduction in the amount of vitamin C absorbed by the cells lining the gut, which leads to a lack of antioxidant activity 5.

Direct Nutrients:*

Ingredient Active Ingredient Effect
Vitamin C Ascorbic acid

Vitamin C is a vital antioxidant used by a variety of tissues throughout the body to prevent oxidative stress 6.

Supplementation may therefore benefit those carrying the risk ‘A’ allele of the SNP rs2889504, which is associated with impaired vitamin C uptake in the gut, and the development of IBD.

Risk Description

The risk allele ‘T’ of the SNP rs12815313 in the SLC2A14 gene has been associated with an increased risk of developing ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease in a single study, along with rs2889504 and rs10846086.

The authors propose that this effect is driven by a reduction in the amount of vitamin C absorbed by the cells lining the gut, which leads to a lack of antioxidant activity 5.

Direct Nutrients:*

Ingredient Active Ingredient Effect
Vitamin C Ascorbic acid

Vitamin C is an antioxidant which is used throughout the body to prevent against oxidative stress 6.

Supplementation may therefore benefit those carrying the risk ‘T’ allele of the SNP rs12815313, which is associated with impaired vitamin C uptake in the gut, and the development of IBD.
